There was a great deal of effort and concentration amongst the young masterchefs, who were being judged not only for their cookery and presentation skills, but also for their planning and organisation of a healthy meal within a limited budget - and their ability to cope in a demanding situation.
The Rotarian Judges were most impressed by the enthusiasm and competence of all the competitors, who were a credit to their Head of Food Technology, Sue Buckingham, who said: "we had a lot of students enter the competition this year and it was very difficult to select just 14 finalists for the 'cook off'.
Presenting the prizes, Neil Wallace, the President of Coulsdon Manor Rotary Club, explained that the consistently high standard and imaginative menus had made it a very close and difficult decision. The winner was 13 year old Shaani Dow from Wallington with Sophie Constable, 12, from Croydon a close second. Seventeen year old Daniel Borer from Coulsdon, a previous winner of the competition was awarded 3rd place. Shaani will now go on to the Rotary District round, with the enthusiastic support of Oasis Academy Coulsdon and Coulsdon Manor Rotary Club.
