After a weekend selection he went to Wales on a residential course. He did so well that he won two awards for effort and leadership and was moved from his group up to the BTEC course with cadets of two to three years experience. At this level he was still impressing the instructors both physically and mentally and showed real determination. Top student on the course. The guys in charge asked if he would like to come back next year as an instructor cadet! He is now joining the local army cadets. £200 grant will be used for: fitness equipment Name of award winner: Jane Dierdrick-Wilson Age: 11 Reason for Award: Jane belongs to a local sports acrobatics club named Allstarz. She went to a regional competition in North London and won. She then went to Stoke and her trio came 9th out of 40 in this National competition. She also appeared in the local paper £200 grant will be used for: Jane wants to spend the money on some PE equipment Name of award winner: Dheeren Somarchand Age: 14 Reason for award: Fantastic attitude of 'can do' and 'will do' towards the organisation of Sports Festival at the Academy for local primary school children. The teacher in charge of the event could rely on him to do what he said he was going to do. Fantastic organisation - never complained and took the initiative on several occasions. Peeyush Sheelamanikanda, age 12, was the first receipient of the Jack Petchy Award. The Brunel Family member was presented with the Award after a member of the public wrote in to Mr Millar, Principal, praising his perfect manners. Peeyush gave up his seat on the 466 bus into Croydon three times on one journey. He received a medallion and £200 to spend on a community project of his choosing. Well done Peeyush!
