We recently came together as a whole academy for a very special day in memory of Summer and Freddie, two much‑loved former students, who sadly passed away from heart conditions.
Summer and Freddie’s families, friends and teachers continue to honour them each year by raising awareness of cardiac screening in young people. This is why the academy chose to support Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a national charity that works to prevent sudden cardiac deaths through screening, research and bereavement support.
Below is a wonderful first‑hand account of the day, written by Elisa in Year 7, capturing the atmosphere and spirit of the event beautifully.
“On Thursday 30th of April, we held a fantastic fundraising day at Oasis Academy Coulsdon, to celebrate what would have been Summer’s 16th birthday. At break and lunch, there was a wonderful atmosphere as everyone rushed to buy the different types of cakes and cookies that were being sold, as well as Summer’s favourite crafts such as pipe cleaner flowers and handmade scrunchies.
“For the main event, there was a Fun Run in the field, where students ran to raise money for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y), which helps prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young people. To start the run off, our Principal, Ms Green, gave an uplifting speech on the sports court, thanking the runners for their kind donations and saying that she was “hoping to raise £2,000 by the end of the day.” She also mentioned that this was a practice run for her half marathon over the bank holiday weekend, also to raise money for C.R.Y.
“There was an excitement in the air as we lined up to begin the moment, we had all been waiting for.
“As we ran, there were even Year 10s cheering us on and ringing bells, which was especially encouraging. We ran as many laps as we could around the field, got fun stamps on our hands and even received certificates at the end for our participation! It was definitely a memorable moment.
“At the end of the day, we were lucky enough to cool off from running in the lovely hot sun with some ice creams and lollies sold by the Year 10s – helping us to work towards our fundraising goal. The day ended with an afterschool sponsored football tournament, which was held in honour of Freddie. It was very close, but in the end the score for the final round ended up being 1:0 won by the orange team!
“The whole day was an unforgettable experience for us all, coming together for such a great cause, and I really hope we can do something like this again in the future!”
